What Data Engineers Earn Working for International Clients in Asia

India's range runs from the lowest floor in the table to $8,470+, a spread of more than $6,000. The figure is what data engineers in that market earn working directly for foreign companies, before any employer or platform costs.

Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia start within $120 of each other, so seniority and stack decide the price there more than the country does. Vietnam has the lowest ceiling of the five. All five ranges are open at the top.

US Pay Benchmark for Data Engineers

BLS has no data engineer occupation. Our fixed mapping uses Data Scientists (15-2051), whose BLS definition covers data modeling and turning raw data into usable information. BLS defines Database Architects (15-1243) as workers who "model, design, and construct large relational databases or data warehouses", which fits a warehouse-first hire, so that column sits alongside.

Monthly figures are the annual wages on the BLS OEWS profiles for 15-2051 and 15-1243 divided by 12 and rounded to the nearest $10. The annual medians are $120,230 and $139,500.

The architects column pays more at all five percentiles, with about a quarter of the employment. For a hire who owns ingestion and orchestration more than schema design, the data scientists column is the closer match.

Salary is only part of the US cost. In the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, wages and salaries made up 68.5% of employer compensation costs for full-time private industry workers, and benefits the other 31.5%.

Time Zone Overlap with ET, CT and PT

US nightly batch jobs run while Asia is at work. Midnight in New York is 11:00 am in Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta and Bangkok while US daylight time lasts, which ends on 1 November 2026 per NIST. None of the cities below change their clocks.

After 1 November 2026, every time in the table moves one hour later.

Data engineering splits into two kinds of hours, and each suits a different schedule:

• Pipeline watch, Ho Chi Minh City, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm (02:00 to 11:00 UTC). That is 10:00 pm to 7:00 am in New York. The engineer is at the desk when the overnight load fails and can backfill before your analysts open their dashboards.
• Overlap for modeling work, Bengaluru, 2:30 pm to 11:30 pm (09:00 to 18:00 UTC). That is 5:00 am to 2:00 pm EDT: five hours of a 9-to-5 day in New York, four with Chicago (4:00 am to 1:00 pm CDT) and two with San Francisco (2:00 am to 11:00 am PDT).

Metric definitions and schema changes need the shared hours, since the analysts who consume them sit in the US. Backfills, reruns and warehouse maintenance fit the hours outside the overlap. We agree that split before the offer, which is how our placements get 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours.

Night hours cost more for employees in two markets: at least 10% extra between 10 pm and 6 am in the Philippines (Labor Code Article 86), and at least 30% between 22:00 and 06:00 in Vietnam (Labor Code Articles 98 and 106). The Ho Chi Minh City day shift above carries no night premium.

Data Engineer Skills to Screen For

PostgreSQL was used by 58.2% of professional developers in Stack Overflow's 2025 survey, against 6.5% for BigQuery, 4.2% for Snowflake and 3.2% for Databricks SQL. Good SQL is common. Hands-on time with a cloud warehouse is not, so test on the platform you run.

SQL modeling and dbt contracts

A dbt model contract, once enforced, makes dbt run a preflight check that the query returns the column names and data types defined in YAML. Warehouses enforce only some constraints: Snowflake's constraints overview marks primary key, unique and foreign key as not enforced on standard tables. Load a table with a duplicate key and ask the candidate which test catches it.

Orchestration after Airflow 3

Apache Airflow 3.0 shipped on 22 April 2025, and Airflow 2 reached end of life a year later, per the project's supported versions table. The upgrade guide lists what breaks: task code can no longer open sessions on the metadata database, SubDAGs are gone, and SLAs gave way to Deadline Alerts. Ask for the last DAG the candidate migrated and what they rewrote.

Streaming on Kafka without ZooKeeper

Apache Kafka 4.0, released on 18 March 2025, was the first major release to run entirely without ZooKeeper, in KRaft mode. Brokers now require Java 17. The new consumer rebalance protocol is on by default at the server, but consumers opt in with group.protocol=consumer. A candidate who ran a 3.x cluster should be able to describe the migration path and the rebalances it removed.

Lakehouse table formats

Version 2 of the Apache Iceberg spec added row-level deletes through delete files, without rewriting data files. Version 3 adds binary deletion vectors, row lineage and a variant type. Ask the candidate how they compacted small files and delete files on a busy table, and which engines in your stack can read v3.

Warehouse cost ownership

Snowflake doubles credit usage with each step up in warehouse size, and bills per second with a 60-second minimum each time a warehouse starts. A job that resumes a suspended warehouse at five-minute intervals pays that minimum twelve times an hour. Give the candidate a month of query history and ask which schedule, size or auto-suspend setting they would change first.

Contractor or Employer of Record for a US Company

Software is not one of the nine categories of commissioned work that can be "work made for hire" under 17 U.S.C. § 101. A contractor's dbt models, DAGs and ingestion code stay theirs until transferred, and § 204(a) requires that transfer in writing, signed.

IRS Publication 515 says the place where someone performs the services determines the source of the income, so a data engineer working from Hanoi or Kuala Lumpur earns foreign-source income. A foreign individual gives the payer Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status.

Local law applies its own test. Philippine courts use the four-fold test, and in Atok Big Wedge v. Gison the Supreme Court called control over the worker's conduct the most important of the four. Article 13 of Vietnam's 2019 Labor Code treats an agreement under another name as a labor contract when it covers a paid job, wages and management or supervision.

A one-off warehouse migration with a fixed end date suits a contractor agreement. English Level and Working Norms

Thailand's IT workers score 459 on the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, above the country's overall 402, which ranks 116th of 123 countries and regions. Malaysia leads the table at 581, against a global average of 488.

A data engineer's English shows up in column descriptions, model documentation and the incident note that explains why a dashboard was wrong. Ask finalists to document one of your messiest tables in YAML. It tests whether analysts in the US could use the table without asking.

Plan around both holiday calendars. Thanksgiving on 26 November 2026 is a working day in Asia, so an engineer there can watch the holiday-weekend sales loads while your US team is off. Vietnam's Labor Code gives five paid days for Lunar New Year (Article 112), so avoid scheduling a warehouse cutover for that week.

Stage 4: Live technical interview with a senior engineer Run a mock data incident: the revenue dashboard is 12% low on Monday morning. Watch how the candidate traces lineage, checks the last successful load and writes the note to the analytics team.

Stage 5: Background and reference checks Ask former managers how often the candidate's pipelines failed silently, and how they handled access to production data. Then sign a contract that assigns the IP, as a contractor agreement or through an EOR.
